| About the Church Year Colours
White and Gold are symbols of joy. They are used at Christmas, Easter, Marriages, and Baptisms. Also commonly used for burials as we celebrate the departed one's joining with Christ. Red is a symbol of the tongues of fire of the Holy Spirit and blood. Red is used for Pentecost Sunday, Ordinations, Confirmations, and Holy Week. Scarlet (a deep red) is frequently used on days honouring the death of a martyred saint. Blue and Purple are symbols of penitence and royalty. They are used during Lent (purple) and Advent (blue) and on some other special days. Green is a symbol of hope and growth. It is the colour of the seasons of Epiphany and Pentecost. Black is the colour of Good Friday (a symbol of sadness). Black also used to be used for funerals, but white has replaced it in order to remind us of the hope of the resurrection. |
